Learning opportunities and educational objectives


It is expected that all GPRs will have undergone some training in minor surgery skills before commencing this post.


Educational objectives


  • Generic skills
    • Carry out an accurate history and examination
    • Prioritise clinical problems
    • Develop communication skills
    • Management of common acute emergencies
    • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
    • Principles of drug useage, includmg pain relief
    • Preoperative and early postoperative assessment
    • Team working and basic medical ethics
    • Principles of audit, self-assessment, time management
    • Basic health management and health economics
    • The value of computing and IT
    • Supervision of junior doctors and medical students
  • Specific skills
    • Take a dermatological history, including occupational and drug history,previous treatments and social impact
    • Competence in evaluating and recording physical signs in skin, hair, nails and mucosa
    • Understand dermatological nomenclature in order to convey an accurate description
    • Understand presentation, natural history, assessment and treatment in
      • psoriasis
      • eczemas
      • leg ulcers
      • acne and rosacea
      • urticarias
      • benign tumours
      • malignancy
      • warts
      • infections and fungal disorders
      • connective tissue disorders
      • acute disorders
    • Appreciate the broad scope of dermatology and the relationship between dermatology and general medicine
    • Principles and practicalities of treatment including
      • dosage and strength of topical therapy
      • phototherapy
      • immunosuppression
      • dressings
      • nursing procedures
      • patient/parent education
    • Specialised areas eg: photosensitivity, phototherapy, contact allergy, patch testing, paediatric dermatology, surgery, cryotherapy, mycology, specimen collection
    • Theory and practice of skin biopsy techniques, application and complications
    • Relationships with radiotherapy, plastic surgery and pathology
    • Understand which disorders require referral
