Starting your hospital post

by Brad Cheek last modified 15-03-2012 09:52

Eportfolio

Your e-portfolio will have been updated with your Clinical Supervisor for your hospital/ITP post at the start of each post.  If the clinical supervisor named is incorrect or if there are any other changes please contact the scheme office.

Roadmap for GP training and the nMRCGP

You can access the roadmap which sets out clearly what WPBA you need to do and when, the timings for your Educational Supervisor meetings and much more.  Please look at the roadmap and familiarise yourself with it and use it as a guide throughout your training programme.

Learning Objective for Hospital Post/ITP Posts

The scheme has spent time discussing and reviewing the learning objectives for hospital posts. Please ensure that you look at the appropriate learning objectives for each of your hospital posts at the start of each new post.  These learning objectives are also relevant to those undertaking ITP posts in these specialties.

The educational documentation for ITP posts provides further detail of the scope of the post.

Clinical Supervisor meetings and e-portfolio

You should meet with your clinical supervisor for your post at the beginning, the mid-point and the end of your post to look at your e-portfolio and to define and review the learning opportunities to meet both the curriculum and the learning objectives for your post. With the learning objectives there is also a list of learning opportunities defined for each post - you should discuss with your clinical supervisor the arrangements which can be made for you to achieve your specific learning objectives using these opportunities.  Enter the defined learning objectives in the PDP of your e-portfolio.

Mid-post meetings: Clinical Supervisor

Although there isn’t an identified slot in the eportfolio to record the outcome of any midpost discussions you may have with your Clinical Supervisor it would be prudent perhaps to use a log entry to reflect on the discussion and then put the learning needs that you have defined into your PDP.   At the end of your attachment your Clinical Supervisor will meet with you to complete a CSR.

 Scheme: mid-post meeting

Half-way through each hospital or ITP post the scheme will contact you to arrange a mid-post discussion, this is a meeting with one of the Training Programme Directors lasting about twenty minutes.  The mid post meeting form outlines of the basis of the discussions.

This meeting will be an opportunity for you to let us know how you are progressing in each post and to review how you are progressing with your portfolio.  We will look at your progress toward your educational objectives in your PDP at this meeting. However, if you have any problems or difficulties whatever at any time, please do not hesitate to contact one of the Training Programme Directors or the scheme managers.

End of Post: Hospital Posts and ITP clinical attachments:

At the end of your hospital post or clinical attachment we will ask you to complete a report on hospital post electronically and share this with your clinical supervisor by email (please also copy in the Programme Office) who should add his/her comments on the final page.  After completion of the final page the clinical supervisor should forward the report to the scheme office.

End of Post: ITPs General Practice attachments:

At the end of your General Practice attachment your GP trainer will ask you to complete a Tynedale Questionnaire.  After you have completed this you should share this with your GP Trainer via email (please also copy in the Programme Office).  Your GP Trainer should complete the form and send it to the scheme.

Top tips for getting the most out of your hospital post

Ensure that you complete the appropriate minimum number of assessments according to the Roadmap during each post on your rotation and at the end of post ensure that your Clinical Supervisor completes the Clinical Supervisor Report in your e-portfolio.

Finally if you have any queries relating to hospital induction/contracts please contact the appropriate Medical Staffing department.

We hope that you enjoy and benefit from the learning opportunities in your new post.
