About the practice

Hanley

A friendly isolated rural dispensing practice, 30 miles south east of Carlisle, surrounded by the Pennines, probably the highest surgery in England at 1100 feet above sea level. The surgery is attached to Alston Cottage Hospital which has a minor injuries unit, 10 in-patient beds, a day hospital, a physiotherapy department and a chiropody department. We have 2350 patients and the practice area has a diameter of about 12 miles. We are paper light, with all consultations recorded onto the desk-top terminals. All incoming lab results (via lab links) are processed on the computers. There is a consulting room, computer station and individual access to the internet for the GP registrar. The practice is covered by CHoC for out of hours.

Practice staff: 3 part time Practice Nurses, 1 Receptionist, 1 Dispenser, 2 Medicine Managers and Practice Manager. We have daily contact with the 2 district nurses. There is also one community midwife who does one antenatal clinic in the surgery once weekly. Also there is one part time health visitor.

Clinics: We used to have specialized clinics in the afternoons. We now have mixed clinics in the afternoons except for Wednesday afternoons which is the children's/vaccination clinic and the first Friday afternoon per month with visiting chiropodist, optician and dietician.

Dr Hanley has an interest in psychiatry, hypnosis and NLP psychotherapy. He is a member of the local LMC executive. Dr Mills is the Practice diabetic lead. She fits IUCDs.
