Time Off After Out of Hours Night Shift

by Andy Punton last modified 28-01-2008 14:13

Following the last workshop, I promised to seek clarification as to whether time taken off after a GP Registrar's Out of Hours night shift should incorporate their personal study time.

The following has been agreed as best practice. GP Registrars undertaking an out of hours night shift should have the full day off afterwards, to meet European Working Time Directives. This time off should include any personal study time allocated for that week, for the following reasons:

  • GPRs already have study leave granted to attend the out of hours study modules.
  • The time taken off will impinge on their daytime clinical experience if they drop additional patient contact sessions during that week to still allow the personal study time.
  • The service to the Practice is recognition for the study leave allowed for the out of hours modules.
  • There is a consensus that GPRs clinical exposure is already less than an ideal and should be a priority.
