Aims
- To enable the GP Registrar to have an appreciation and understanding of the role of IT in General Practice.
- To enable the GP Registrar to use IT in an effective manner in current General Practice.
Objectives
The GPR should:
1st Six weeks:
- Have an introduction to current data protection legislation
- Operate and use the computer within the consultation being able to:
Access record
Enter data
Prescribe (Repeat and Acute) - Be aware of some of the medico-legal aspects of record keeping
- Be able to access help
- Be able to use FAX
- Be able to use Intranet
1st Four months:
- Be able to use NHS Net and use E-mail
- Be able to access Internet and Electronic Databases
- Have knowledge of data protection legislation and computer security issues
- Be able to undertake basic searches as an aid to audit
- Become more aware of the integration of the computer within the consultation
Within Year:
- Revisit the use of the computer within the Consultation and become proficient with those items mentioned above
- Be aware of the Government IT Strategy
- Be able to access Protocols, Guidelines, and patient information sheets
- Become aware of the computer in Practice Management issues e.g. Staff Training, Strategy and Development, Data duplication, Health and Safety etc
- Have an understanding of the various types of Hardware
- Be able to discuss pros and cons of Computer vs. Paper records and communication
- Develop word processing skills
