Aims

  • To enable the GP Registrar to have an appreciation and understanding of the role of IT in General Practice.
  • To enable the GP Registrar to use IT in an effective manner in current General Practice.

Objectives

The GPR should:

1st Six weeks:

  1. Have an introduction to current data protection legislation
  2. Operate and use the computer within the consultation being able to:
    Access record
    Enter data
    Prescribe (Repeat and Acute)
  3. Be aware of some of the medico-legal aspects of record keeping
  4. Be able to access help
  5. Be able to use FAX
  6. Be able to use Intranet

1st Four months:

  1. Be able to use NHS Net and use E-mail
  2. Be able to access Internet and Electronic Databases
  3. Have knowledge of data protection legislation and computer security issues
  4. Be able to undertake basic searches as an aid to audit
  5. Become more aware of the integration of the computer within the consultation

Within Year:

  1. Revisit the use of the computer within the Consultation and become proficient with those items mentioned above
  2. Be aware of the Government IT Strategy
  3. Be able to access Protocols, Guidelines, and patient information sheets
  4. Become aware of the computer in Practice Management issues e.g. Staff Training, Strategy and Development, Data duplication, Health and Safety etc
  5. Have an understanding of the various types of Hardware
  6. Be able to discuss pros and cons of Computer vs. Paper records and communication
  7. Develop word processing skills
