Teaching GP Registrars About Practice Staff

1. Appointment of Practice Staff

a) Necessity of appointment;
b) Advertising;
c) Short listing;
d) Interview techniques;
e) Contracts;
f) Reviews;
g) Appraisals.

2. Training of Practice Staff

a) Training required for the position. Ongoing training both in-house and out of the surgery setting
b) Benefits to staff of further training.
c) Professional bodies involved including medical and legal cover both for the practice and the employee (e.g. UKCC, UK2000 and PREP for Practice Nurses, AMSPAR for Practice Managers).
d) Duties expected of employee including job description, hours to be worked, liaison with other members of the primary health care team and the importance of this. Of particular importance is what they are allowed to do, what they are not allowed to do and guidelines and protocols to cover these aspects of work.
e) Future development including the future Nurse Practitioners. Practice Managers possibly becoming partners, development of the receptionists role to cover fund holding etc.

3. Staff Pay

a) Sickness, maternity leave etc.

Way of doing this

Get the trainee to:-

1. Produce a job description for each job;
2. Work with a member of staff for half a day - possibly both at the beginning and the end of the Practice attachment;
3. Attend meetings involving all members of staff possibly including appraisals;
4. Hold a seminar on management structure including the hierarchy of the Practice team, employment law and Health and Safety at Work:
5. Use a member of staff as an educator involving them in the seminar possibly;
6. Bring out the specific qualities of the various members of the team and emphasise team work;
7. Do future planning within the Practice regarding Practice staff in line with Government policy, Practice policy and development etc.
