RUNS and TENS
A tool to explore the use of perceived registrar unmet needs (PRUNs) and trainer educational needs (TENs). The process can be used for individual or group reflection of the trainers skills in tutorials. The concept was published in Education in Primary Care (2008) 19: 80–93. This article is available online to subscribers.- Powerpoint presentation from the the workshop
RUNs and TENS grid
An example of a completed RUNs and TENS grid
How to use the RUNS & TENS tool:
- Collate a list of the GPRs possible educational needs using the RUNs and TENS grid (live during the tutorial or afterwards, or viewing a video of the tutorial)
- Categorise the list on the grid
- Afterwards, which learning needs were covered during the tutorial?
- Which learning needs were not covered? Why not? Could it be because a trainer educational need has been uncovered, for example: you didn't go there because you didn't know how?
Observation of the trainer teaching
Reaccreditation as a trainer requires that every trainer experiences being observed in his/her teaching at least once every 3 years. The trainer workshops will provide an opportunity for this on an annual basis, and it is the trainer can then reflect on the personal learning points from the session.
At reaccreditation, the Deanery may require evidence of this reflection.
